As the temperature outside drops, we cozy up inside our nice, warm houses. Unfortunately, so do insects and rodents. Insects and other pests often will enter a home through an unsealed door, torn screen, crack in the foundation or walls. After entry the pest will inhabit a portion of your home and reproduce. After a pest has infested your home it can be very difficult to exterminate.

Summer may be over but that won’t stop the majority of us from travelling. Praise the Lord of the eastern and western hemispheres, right?

Whether you are jetting off to relax and soak up the sun at a luxury island or going to ski in the French Alps everyone has their own preferences when it comes to travelling and vacations.

But there’s one thing every location has in common no matter where you’re travelling to; pests!

Common pests when travelling

Depending on which location you are visiting, the common pests that you might encounter can vary.

However, the most common pests that could be responsible for putting a downer on your holiday include:

  • Bed Bugs
  • Mosquitoes
  • Flies
  • Ants
  • Rodents
  • Cockroaches

Bed Bugs

When it comes to travelling, bed bugs are the main instigators for ruining your holiday.

Due to the high amount of human traffic that accommodation facilities such as hotels, hostels and lodges accumulate on a regular basis, bed bugs can easily spread like wildfire, hitching a free ride back to your home in your luggage.

Mosquitoes

Everyone knows how much of a nuisance mosquitoes can be. I mean, those bites can become the bane of your existence, particularly if they become really itchy.

Mosquitoes are another type of pest commonly found on holiday, particularly if you are travelling to a hot destination as these biting insects thrive in warm climates.

Pest-borne diseases

Besides the possibility of bringing bed bugs home with you, the biggest risk when travelling is catching a pest-borne disease from biting insects, such as mosquitoes and ticks, particularly if you are visiting subtropical areas of the world.

How to prevent pests when travelling

When it comes to travelling there are a handful of simple and easy prevention techniques that you can enlist to help prevent pests from any species no matter where you are on holiday.

Research

The most important prevention tip to ensure your holiday is kept pest-free is research!

Before you jet off on your travels it’s a good idea to just engage with some light research to discover which pests you could expect to encounter (if any) whilst on holiday.

Insect repellent

Let’s face it, one of the most irritating things about going on holiday is waking up to see yourself littered with an abundance of insect bites, particularly those from a mosquito.

Don’t worry though, as you can help prevent this by remembering to pack a bottle of insect repellent and applying it on a daily basis following the instructions on the packet.

Keep clean

If you’ve read any of our DIY pest control blogs, you’ll know that keeping clean is one of the best ways to get rid of and prevent pests; travelling is no exception!

To help prevent the likes of rodents, ants, cockroaches and flies just remember to keep your hotel room, apartment or villa clean by:

  • Cleaning up food and drink spillage
  • Throwing away uneaten food
  • Ensuring bins aren’t overflowing and emptied regularly
  • Wiping down kitchen counters and surfaces.

Inspect your hotel room

When arriving at your accommodation one of the first things you should do is check your room and any other areas such as kitchens and living rooms for pests.

How to inspect your accommodation for pests:

  • Check around bed frames, bedside cabinets and other furniture
  • Check around skirting boards and where the walls meet the floor
  • Check around windows and door frames
  • Check bathroom areas and kitchens, paying special attention to drains and bins.

Talk to your doctor

Speaking to your doctor is highly recommended before travelling abroad, particularly if you are visiting subtropic areas.

Many of these areas are prone to insect-borne diseases such as Malaria and the Zika virus. Because of this, your doctor will be able to provide you with specific injections to help prevent said diseases affecting you.

Insect nets

Insect nets are a fantastic way to prevent both flying, crawling and biting insects from putting a downer on your holiday.

If you are visiting a place where the risk of vector diseases is high then ensure both windows and your bed come fitted with an insect net.

If you are an adventurer itching to go exploring with nothing but a backpack and a tent, then ensure your shelter comes equipped with an insect net.

Avoid certain times of the day

Avoiding to go outside during certain times of the day can really help contribute to ensuring your holiday is kept pest-free.

Stinging insects such as hornets are active during the day, whilst mosquitoes are primarily active during dawn and dusk.

Doing some research to discover which pests love to inhabit your favourite holiday destination will help you determine which time of day to avoid to ensure you don’t encounter these annoying creatures.
